Rabbits at The Iron Horse Farm

Unfortunately, we do not ship our rabbits due to stress to the rabbits, the increasing costs of airfares, travel times and restrictions by the airlines. We have been known to meet people an hour away from the farm to pick up their new rabbits. If interested, please email us for availability. We have no angora rabbits for sale at this time.

Our English angora rabbits are "fiber" pets. We started with two, a male (a buck) and a female (a doe). We knew that we had one of each sex, but we bought separate cages. They lived in the back hallway of our house getting lots of attention and love, while Skip built the ultimate rabbit hutch. Actually it was more of a condo, and our rabbits were able to see each other as they hopped through their "all-enclosed" runs. One November night in 1995, Mother Nature decided to intervene. The heavy plywood, hinged roof blew off during a wind and rain storm and in the morning, Daisy was in Wally's hutch! Skip, the eternal optimist, said she was not pregnant. I, the pessimist in the family, knew she was. Thirty days later (the normal gestation period) three small rabbits of all different colors were born, and we promptly fell in love with them.

We have continued to add to our "herd" of rabbits, increasing our color choices and fiber. We had to make a decision whether we would breed for "show and fiber" or just fiber. We decided would just concentrate on their fiber, and not the body and markings. Some of our rabbits' colors include chocolate (brown), tortoise, black, chinchilla (a type of gray), fawn, opal, blue and lilac.There is no greater satisfaction that watching a cria being born, a dam and her cria side by side or coming home after a long week-end at a show and feeling ever so proud!

We chose English Angoras because of the four types of angoras (Giants, Satins, French, English), they are the smallest and have the finest fiber. English Angora colors are more subdued than the Satins, which are known for their brilliant colors. English Angora personalities are more docile and calm than the French and Satins. I wanted the option to pluck or clip. The Giants, the largest of the angora breeds, need to be clipped. They don't shed naturally, and the only "recognized" Giant color is white. We liked the fancy fringed or tasseled ears of the English, and French and Satins do not have that. The English also have the least, if any, guard hair when plucked. We pluck each rabbit every 3-4 months and get about 2-3 ounces each time.

English Angora fiber is light, airy, and 7 times warmer than sheep wool. It can be spun and knitted, crocheted, woven alone or blended with other fibers for the ultimate exotic combination. It can be dyed or used in its natural state. It sheds water naturally, but care must be taken not to totally saturate it. When worked alone it tends to shrink when exposed to excess water. When spun (alone or with other fibers) and worked up into a garment, it gives off a "halo" that is beautiful!
